Corbin Sankey
Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes

My name is Corbin Sankey. I am an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. I was born on June 17, 1989, to Margaret "Redcherries" Sankey and Arapaho Chief Alonzo Sankey. I have five siblings: Chief Scott, Angle, Danette, Alondra and Trudy who passed away as a young child. We were raised around our traditional ways, and those traditions have always been an important part of who l am.

From the early age of four, I was drawn to the big drum and traditional singing. I have always wanted to follow in my dad's footsteps. Watching and listening to him inspired me to carry on the songs and traditions that have been passed down through our family.

I am a person who learned the meaning of strength and perseverance at a young age. I lost both of my parents early in life, which was one of the most difficult experiences I have ever faced. I continued my education and successfully completed high school. My experiences have shaped me into a resilient person who believes in perseverance, hope, and never giving up.

My dad Alonzo was the Southern Representative for the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site.

I learned a lot from going with him and listening in in his meetings. I will continue to help preserve our language, traditions, and most of all culture. I intend to pass down knowledge to younger generations so our ways are not lost or forgotten. I am always open if anyone has questions about our ways. I am proud to be Arapaho. I carry our family, our people, and our heritage with pride.
